Born 1971 in Seattle, Washington, Christopher Jarvis spent his early life surrounded by the unparalleled natural environment of the Pacific Northwest. The unique culture of this region is grounded in engagement with nature. His childhood was spent outdoors climbing trees, playing in rivers and hiking up mountains; his earliest life lessons were to love, respect and – above all – conserve the natural environment. It took years of living and traveling around the world to fully appreciate the extraordinary beauty of the Pacific Northwest; and only then did he realize how profoundly that environment had shaped his perspective and ideologies about humans’ relationship with, and impact on, Nature’s ecosystems. This rich connection to nature conservation informed his innovative strategies for social impact, sustainable businesses and development projects.
Christopher has been a successful entrepreneur for the last twenty-one years, based in Manhattan, Paris, Los Angeles and Oslo. Though he spent much of that time as a thought leader in the luxury fashion space, in 2003 he pivoted away from the luxury industry and devoted his vision, creativity and business ambitions to finding elegant solutions to our culture’s biggest problems via sustainable capitalism. This led him to form Jarvis, Clee & Daughters (JC&D), in 2016. JC&D is a venture accelerator – ’seed to scale’ business platform that develop, fund, build, and hire management teams to: launch, execute and operate – high growth, large scale, social impact companies. He positions the organization to be one of society’s leading change agents: one that disrupts the status quo, transforms our culture for the better, and greatly improves people’s lives.
Christopher and Hanno’s professional engagement started ten years ago in Bali, Indonesia. Like most people, Christopher was taken in by Hanno’s infectious passion for the rammed earth technique. He was sold on its merits from the very moment Hanno shared his building experiences and pictures, and impressed with the level of mastery Hanno acquired from his years working alongside Martin Rauch (considered the world's #1 rammed earth expert). But none of this compared to personally experiencing the rammed earth structures Hanno created. The combination of beauty, sophistication, and sustainability made a firm and lasting impact on Christopher. Both men decided they would one day collaborate together on rammed earth developments.
Christopher’s Responsibilities For Earthman
Christopher brings a unique counterpoint and complementary skill set to Hanno, via his years of experience as a leader in luxury fashion and marketing. As Earthman’s consultant, business advisor and ambassador, his general responsibilities include marketing, sales/new business, innovation, vision, strategy, design and creativity. This includes: coordinating business development; bringing new real estate opportunities to Earthman (e.g. luxury residential, commercial and cultural/civil projects); securing new clients and investors; engaging in land speculation; liaising in sales and contract negotiations; spearheading global rammed earth development projects; creating and designing for new projects; marketing and promoting the Earthman brand globally; and enrolling, motivating and managing new projects’ international and local building teams.
Getting his hands dirty: Christopher takes a literal hands on approach to Earthman projects. Most recently, (Summer/Fall 2013), on Earthman's Paraguay project, Christopher took the lead role, and was personally responsible for, mixing the earth material for half of the job in Paraguay, (or 80 tons!) When budgets and time permit, he’ll lend his mixing expertise, (and if nessesary), his hands-on site work, for all future Earthman projects.
